Valve has announced a global price adjustment for its Steam Deck handheld gaming console, resulting in increases of up to $300 for customers in the United States. According to the company, the price hikes are a direct response to a global supply shortage of memory modules and other vital electronic components, driven heavily by the rapid expansion of artificial intelligence firms.
The updated pricing structure for the Steam Deck OLED models in the US market is as follows:
- 512 GB OLED Model: Increased from $549 to $789 (a $240 increase).
- 1 TB OLED Model: Increased from $649 to $949 (a $300 increase).
Certified refurbished models have also seen adjusted pricing, with the 512 GB version now retailing at $629 and the 1 TB version priced at $759.
Valve emphasized that the internal hardware specifications and features of the Steam Deck remain entirely unchanged. The price correction is strictly meant to absorb the rising costs of storage and RAM hardware, which have surged due to massive procurement demands from data centers supporting large-scale AI applications.
“These new prices reflect the current state of component costs and other global logistical challenges affecting the entire industry,” Valve stated regarding the price adjustment.
Despite the financial impact on consumer electronics, the price correction coincides with stabilized inventory levels. The intermittent availability that previously plagued the official storefront has ended, and restocked models are expected to remain consistent despite ongoing industry constraints.
While the recently launched Steam Controller has escaped this round of price hikes, the supply chain crunch introduces uncertainty for Valve’s wider hardware pipeline. The rising cost of manufacturing components could potentially delay the anticipated rollouts of upcoming hardware initiatives, including the Steam Machine and Steam Frame, though Valve maintains that both products are still targeted for release later this year.
