Sony has officially announced the launch of the FX5, a new full-frame camera in its Cinema Line lineup equipped with an advanced stacked CMOS image sensor. Designed to provide professional-grade video capture in a portable and compact form factor, the camera is currently available for purchase in select markets.
The camera supports video recording resolutions up to 5K at 60 fps, 4K at 120 fps, and Full HD high-frame-rate capture at 240 fps. Its newly developed sensor features triple native ISO sensitivity bases at 800, 4000, and 12,800, minimizing noise across diverse lighting environments. When shooting in S-Log3 mode, the camera achieves over 15 stops of dynamic range, preserving fine tonal detail in extreme highlight and shadow areas.
The FX5 marks the first model in the Cinema Line series to feature Open Gate recording, which utilizes the entire 3:2 full-frame sensor area to allow versatile cropping for various video formats during post-production. Additionally, it is the first in the line to offer internal 16-bit RAW recording using Sony’s proprietary X-OCN format, eliminating the need for bulky external video recorders.
The unit is powered by the BIONZ XR2 processor, featuring a dedicated artificial intelligence processing unit that performs real-time subject tracking for precise focus on eyes, heads, and bodies, as well as deep-learning-based auto white balance adjustments.
For handling and operational efficiency, the FX5 integrates 5-axis optical image stabilization and an internal cooling fan housed in an isolated chamber to prevent overheating during long shoots. The physical body includes a larger 3.5-inch articulating screen and built-in mounting socket threads, reducing the necessity for external camera cages. Software features include anamorphic lens de-squeeze preview, as well as integration with Sony’s Monitor & Control and Catalyst Prepare applications to enhance remote operation and post-production workflows.
The FX5 is available in two configurations: body-only for approximately $4,899.99 or bundled with a new XLR audio adapter for $ 5,499.99. The accessory shoe-mounted XLR adapter supports 4-channel, 32-bit float audio, while a detachable high-resolution OLED electronic viewfinder is sold separately.
