Electronic Arts has confirmed that The Sims 4 will receive an autosave system in an upcoming free update scheduled for July 21.

This addition arrives nearly 12 years after the life simulation game’s initial debut, addressing one of the most persistent and frequent requests from the player community since its 2014 launch.

How the Autosave System Works

The introduction of the autosave feature is part of a broader update focused on quality-of-life improvements. Previously, sudden game crashes or unexpected shutdowns could erase hours of unsaved progress. Given the unpredictable, story-driven nature of The Sims 4, reproducing lost gameplay events is often difficult for players.

To mitigate this, the new system will automatically generate save points during specific gameplay triggers:

  • Lot Transitions: The game will save when traveling between different locations.
  • Gameplay Milestones: Specific in-game achievements or events will trigger an automatic save.
  • Time Intervals: The system will save after extended periods of active play without a manual save.

For players who prefer manual control over their save files, the autosave system can be entirely deactivated. In its place, the update introduces customizable reminders. These notifications will prompt players to save manually at designated, user-defined intervals. Electronic Arts confirmed that both the frequency of the autosaves and the interval of the manual reminders can be fully configured in the game settings.

Community Reception and Future Updates

While the announcement has been met with widespread enthusiasm, some community members have noted the exceptionally long timeline for its implementation, given that it has been a core request for over a decade.

Alongside the autosave feature, EA teased another quality-of-life update planned for September. This subsequent patch will focus on enhancing Sim autonomy, making character actions more consistent and responsive. Further details regarding the September update are expected to be shared in the coming weeks.
