Anthropic is currently experiencing a noticeable wave of subscription cancellations following the global rollout of an invisible watermarking system embedded in text produced and processed by its Claude artificial intelligence models.

The initiative, implemented earlier this month, has provoked substantial backlash, particularly among professional users who rely on the platform primarily for auxiliary tasks such as proofreading, drafting revisions, document summarization, reference verification, and code optimization.

A primary concern among subscribers is the potential misattribution of human work. Many users do not utilize Claude to generate original text or software from scratch but rather leverage the model to polish existing human-authored material. As a result, there is widespread apprehension that the invisible watermark could unfairly contaminate finished projects, creating the misleading impression that the content was generated entirely and exclusively by an automated system.

This ambiguity introduces considerable professional, contractual, and academic risks. In environments where universities, corporate clients, or employers enforce strict restrictions on artificial intelligence, detected watermarks could lead to penalties or disputes over intellectual property and professional integrity.

For example, software engineers have voiced concerns that delivering source code reviewed by Claude could raise doubts about the true authorship of their work, even when the AI functioned merely as a standard syntax checker.

Anthropic has sought to reassure users by clarifying that the system remains fully imperceptible and does not degrade the core operational experience. According to the company, the watermark is only attached when text or code is copied directly from the interface platform, serving to signify that the AI interacted with the material rather than confirming it authored the content originally.

The adoption of watermarking technologies is largely propelled by European Union regulatory mandates requiring tech firms to transparently identify AI-generated media.

Other major industry leaders, including Google, Microsoft, and OpenAI, are expected to introduce comparable safeguards. However, market analysts suggest that these regulatory requirements may inadvertently drive users toward open-source models, particularly from China, which can run locally on private hardware and remain exempt from strict compliance frameworks.
