The fastest way to use AI for homework is also the least useful: paste in the question, get the answer and hope some of it sticks. DABIDA is building an AI tutor around a different premise. Its GeniTeacher platform wants students to keep working on paper while the software watches the path they took to get there.

The philosophy is that a final answer is a thin signal. A math problem can be wrong because a student misunderstood a concept, made an arithmetic slip, chose an inefficient method or gave up halfway through. Those are very different problems, and a generic chatbot often sees none of them.

I met DABIDA CEO Eun-Seung Lee in person as he demonstrated GeniTeacher. The core pitch: AI should help students reason through a problem instead of becoming a faster answer machine (I totally agree). The practical twist is that DABIDA tries to capture not only the written answer, but also the sequence of marks, corrections and intermediate work that led to it.

Students can write with DABIDA’s GeniPen (a CES 2024 Innovation Awards Honoree) on compatible paper, use a stylus on a tablet or upload a photo. The company says GeniTeacher combines its handwriting-recognition technology with image analysis, allowing it to account for diagrams and text. Lee told me the platform also uses a mix of outside AI models, chosen according to task and cost, rather than betting the company on one large language model, which makes total sense.

The goal is to issue a sequence of “Socratic” hints: a light prompt first, then a more specific one if the student remains stuck. DABIDA also says it can generate reports covering accuracy, weak concepts, recurring errors and hint use, along with automated error notes that preserve the original problem, the student’s working and an explanation of the likely mistake. This is a more useful process than simply grading an answer.

A 2024 EEG study of 36 university students found broader brain connectivity during handwriting than typing. The researchers argued that the pattern may be beneficial for learning, but the study did not directly measure whether handwriting improved classroom performance. The logic seem sound, but this is under intense research.

DABIDA did not begin with GeniTeacher. Its earlier GeniClass and GeniPen products focused on remote learning, letting a teacher see a student’s handwriting during a live class. That pair became a CES 2024 Innovation Awards Honoree in the Smart Communities category. Lee said GeniTeacher grew from that existing handwriting-capture technology after the company began adding AI capabilities in 2024.

More recently, WIPO named DABIDA one of 11 2026 Global Awards winners and described it as a handwriting-based AI tutoring system. WIPO says DABIDA has 23 patents, exclusive distribution agreements in seven countries and a Samsung Electronics partnership signed in 2026.

Lee described several possible revenue streams: subscriptions, smart-pen sales, publisher relationships and licensing. He cited a potential $20 monthly base subscription in our conversation, though pricing and availability can vary by market. There’s also a potential future marketplace where teachers could sell their own high-quality questions, with DABIDA taking a commission.

DABIDA’s thesis will be proven when schools and families can see that students learn more, teachers save time without surrendering judgment, and the company refines the curriculum by analyzing common learning stumbling points. Many people currently say that AI makes children less smart. DABIDA is on a quest to leverage AI to take teaching to the next level.
