Lenovo’s Project AeroBlade is one of the more technically interesting laptop concepts the company is showing this year. The 14-inch notebook measures less than 10mm thick and weighs under 830 grams, but the real innovation is inside.
Instead of using conventional rotating fans, AeroBlade relies on solid-state active cooling technology developed with Frore Systems.
The difference between active and passive cooling matters. AeroBlade may not have fans, but it isn’t simply letting the processor dissipate heat through the chassis. Lenovo’s Active Flow cooling system actively moves air using Frore’s AirJet technology.
During my briefing, Lenovo explained that AeroBlade uses four thin solid-state cooling modules. Inside each module, a piezoelectric membrane vibrates at ultrasonic frequencies, creating airflow without the rotating blades and electric motors found in traditional laptop fans.
The technology addresses a fundamental limitation of ultra-thin laptop design.
Processors generate significant heat when operating continuously at high performance. Making a laptop thinner reduces the internal volume available for fans, heat pipes, airflow channels, and other cooling hardware. Fanless laptops typically compensate by using lower-power processors or allowing performance to drop as temperatures rise.
AeroBlade is designed to challenge that tradeoff.
According to Lenovo, Frore’s system can generate 17 times more back pressure than a conventional cooling solution. During our conversation, Lenovo compared it to the difference between a leaf blower and a bicycle pump. A leaf blower moves large amounts of air but loses effectiveness when airflow is restricted, while a pump can maintain pressure through a much narrower opening.
That allows AeroBlade to use very small vents and considerably thinner cooling hardware.
It also offers potential reliability advantages. Lenovo claims thatthe smaller openings can reduce dust and liquid intrusion, while eliminating spinning fan bearings removes one mechanical component that can eventually fail.
The concept itself weighs under 830g and measures less than 10mm thick, despite using a 14-inch display. Lenovo has built the chassis from magnesium and aluminum and fitted it with an OLED display, Thunderbolt 4, and Wi-Fi 7.
The key claim is not merely that AeroBlade is extremely thin, but that its active cooling system can maintain the performance expected from a conventional laptop without requiring traditional fans.
We would want to test that under sustained CPU and GPU workloads before drawing conclusions, but the approach is genuinely more innovative than simply shaving another millimeter off a chassis.
For now, Project AeroBlade remains a proof of concept. Lenovo has not announced a price, production schedule, or commercial model based on the design.
