Even though the first units of the iPhone Duo will only be arriving on the 23rd of October to clients who successfully pre-ordered on the 16th, Apple has already started selling and shipping official accessories for the foldable. However, early reports reveal an unexpected design choice regarding the official silicone case: users must expose an internal adhesive strip before installation. Without this step, the case fails to secure properly and can easily slip off the device.

This approach has surprised industry analysts and consumers alike. Rather than relying on traditional magnetic alignment—a staple for modern smartphone accessories—Apple opted for a temporary adhesive to keep the silicone case firmly in place. This unconventional method applies specifically to the standard silicone model, which retails for $79. In contrast, the more expensive folio case option, priced at $129, reportedly bypasses the need for adhesive entirely, offering a more traditional alternative for users who prefer a secure fit without sticky backing. Alternatively, consumers looking to avoid adhesives may turn to third-party accessories.

The launch of the iPhone Duo coincides with massive market demand. The foldable device recently entered pre-orders in select regions starting at $1,999, with initial stock reportedly selling out rapidly. This high-demand underscores the immense popularity of Apple’s first foldable entry, even as early adopters navigate unique accessory requirements.
While Apple’s choice of an adhesive-backed silicone case marks a departure from standard design practices, it highlights the engineering challenges associated with protecting foldable form factors. As the device reaches more consumers globally, user feedback will likely determine whether this adhesive approach becomes a permanent standard for foldable cases or if future production runs will transition toward magnetic solutions.
For now, buyers of the standard silicone case must exercise caution during installation to ensure their new device remains protected against accidental drops and daily wear. Third-party manufacturers are also expected to release alternative cases soon, giving consumers more choices to protect their investments.
This “sticky situation”, in other words, means that the users can only remove and reapply the official silicon case a limited number of times before the adhesive runs off. Since this is a first-gen product, probably this design should be revisited when a new generation of the Duo is released.
