WiGig Alliance Looking To Faster Wireless

Will out laptops be sporting WiGig standards in the future? Well, the folks over at the WiGig alliance certainly hope so, and they’ve finally completed the unified specification. Based on the specs, the speeds will be able to hit 7Gbps, which is a whole lot faster than the current Wi-Fi we have. The best part is that it will stay backwards-compatible with existing 802.11 specs, which will be great when they decide to roll it out. WiGig compatible products won’t appear so fast, and the earliest is probably mid-2011. The companies supporting this standard are industry heavyweights such as Microsoft, Samsung, Nokia, Intel, Dell and NVIDIA, so there will certainly be ample backing. Will this become the Wi-Fi of the future?
