Twitter now blocked in Egypt

Twitter blocked in Egypt

Twitter has just added one more country to the list of countries the micro-blogging service is banned in. As of today, folks in Egypt will not be able to access the service, through Twitter.com or third party apps. This was announced by a couple of tweets from the Twitter Global PR account. Though it hasn’t been confirmed, the blocking of the social media phenomenon is supposedly a move by the government in response to the thousands of people on the streets who were protesting against the 30 year rule of Mubarak (current president of Egypt). Haven’t they learnt that blocking access to something is just going to make people look for alternatives to Twitter or find some other way to access it? Well we don’t know how long this ban will last, but hopefully the turmoil settles down so the folks in Egypt can micro-blog again.
