Update: the original title and post may have made it sound like Mirasol (the technology) was dead. This is indeed *not the case*. We apologize for any confusion. What was cancelled was an eBook project that uses Mirasol. Yesterday, Paul Jacobs told a panel of journalists, including our own Hubert Nguyen, that Mirasol will continue to evolve.

According to Qualcomm CEO Paul Jacobs, the first Mirasol-based eBook product to be released by the company (which was an e-reader that was meant to arrive in Q1 this year) has hit a wall, ending up as a cancelled product simply because the management was not too happy with said device. Good for them, as we always believed that it is better to take your time and release a product that works great and appeals to the masses rather than introduce a device which is gimped right out of the box.

According to Paul Jacobs, “We were getting ready to launch a low volume ereader product, but I didn’t like the whole system. I didn’t want to launch our first product and have it be something that we didn’t really like, so we basically decided not to launch it, and instead just focus on the next version of it.”

We saw the Mirasol-based e-book reader at CES earlier this year, and came away quite impressed with the image quality even under bright light. It is a real shame that it will not be slugging it out with the rest of the industry players, hopefully Qualcomm will be working on something similar but better for the future.
