Let’s face it, you probably wished that Nintendo games made its way on to your iOS device. After all wouldn’t it be cool to play Super Mario on your iPhone, multiplayer Mario Kart on the iPad, and let’s not forget Zelda! The bad news is that chances are you won’t be seeing any Nintendo games making its way onto your iOS device, at least not any time soon and we don’t think the the Pokemon-themed iPhone game really counts.
We’re not sure if it was by chance or by design, but Apple has certainly ushered in a new era of gaming through our tablets and our smartphones. Given that we take our smartphones everywhere we go, having quick and simple games like Angry Birds, Fruit Ninja or Doodle Jump will allow us to entertain ourselves without having to dedicated too much time and effort, unlike portable gaming consoles such as Nintendo’s 3DS or Sony’s PSP where the games are usually more complex and require more time and concentration, which is not a bad thing.
So it’s really no surprise when investors have started to pressure Nintendo to develop titles for the iPhone and other similar platforms. According to Bloomberg:
The rift highlights the dilemma President Satoru Iwata faces as consumers shun Nintendo devices to play games on iPhones, iPads and Facebook Inc.’s website. The flop of the 3DS debut prompted the company to slash prices 40 percent in Japan starting today, the first time the games developer has resorted to such a move within six months of a product’s debut.
Nintendo President Satoru Iwata has said that Nintendo will only make titles for its own products as long as he’s in charge, which is a familiar stance taken by Nokia during the smartphone boom, and we all know how that turned out.
