On Friday, September 19th Apple’s new smartphones were finally released to the public. The day the pre-orders opened up a record number of pre-orders were placed for both iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. Understandably there was a lot of hype for both devices which bring displays larger than any display on a previous iPhone. Carriers too had a great launch weekend due to its hype, Sprint even said that the iPhone 6 release led to its “most successful” iPhone launch in history.

This bit was shared over Twitter by newly appointed Sprint CEO Marcelo Claure. He wrote that this was the most successful iPhone launch for the carrier. Given all of the sales figures that have come in as yet its hard to dispute Claure’s statement.

A day after the pre-orders were opened Apple confirmed that previous record for pre-orders had been broken this year. Earlier today the company confirmed that over the launch weekend it sold over 10 million iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus units combined. Apple doesn’t break down the numbers by model so it is not known if more iPhone 6 units were sold or if the iPhone 6 Plus lead sales over the weekend.

Sprint doesn’t have a long history of carrying the iPhone though. iPhone 4S was the first model it ever carried as opposed to AT&T which initially had exclusivity over the iPhone when it was first released back in 2007.
