spotify

Towards the end of last year Spotify became involved in a controversy of sorts surrounding the treatment of artists by music streaming services like itself, the debate fired up after Taylor Swift pulled all of her music from Spotify, and the company came out with its version of events. 2014 was also a year of growth for this company, Spotify announced today that in 2014 it crossed the milestone of having 15 million subscribers.

Not only does Spotify have 15 million subscribers, the total number of active users crossed 60 million “before 2014 turned into 2015,” a great feat for the company.

The last update on its subscriber count came back in November 2014. At that time Spotify had crossed 12.5 million paying subscribers.

In case you are wondering what is the distinction between monthly active users and subscribers, the latter pay Spotify monthly for its premium service, while over 60 million people use Spotify’s freemium model for listening to music, they don’t mind the ads, because if they did they would be paying for an ad-free experience too.

To celebrate its achievement of this milestone Spotify has put together a new playlist which can be accessed here. It contains tracks from the likes of Ed Sheeran, Kanye West, Daft Punk, Jay Z and Rihanna.
