Spotify has introduced a new app designed specifically for cars, allowing drivers and passengers to stream music, listen to podcasts, and access playlists without connecting a smartphone. The app runs directly on Android Automotive, giving users a more seamless listening experience through their car’s built-in infotainment system.

The rollout begins with selected Audi models, including the all-electric A6 e-tron and Q6 e-tron, as well as the A5, Q5, and A6. The feature is available only in compatible vehicles.
A Better Spotify Experience Behind the Wheel
Unlike Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, which connect a smartphone to the car’s display, Spotify’s new app works independently on the vehicle’s operating system. This allows the company to design its own interface and offer a more consistent experience across supported models.
Previously, Spotify had to work within interface templates provided by Google for Android Automotive. The new approach gives the company greater freedom to improve navigation, speed up app startup, and make accessing music easier, while reducing reliance on a phone’s wireless connection.
Spotify Jam Comes to the Car
One of the key features is Spotify Jam, which lets passengers join a shared listening session by scanning a QR code displayed on the car’s infotainment screen. Once connected, they can suggest tracks and add songs to the playback queue, making it easier for everyone to contribute to the music selection.
Cars with a separate passenger display offer additional entertainment options, including access to music libraries, song lyrics, and video content. When the vehicle is parked or charging, the central screen can also display video podcasts and animations, depending on the model’s capabilities.
Android Auto and Apple CarPlay Are Here to Stay
Despite the launch, Spotify says it will continue supporting Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, so users will still have different ways to enjoy the service in their vehicles.
The company reports that 34% of its monthly active users and 77% of Premium subscribers listen to Spotify while traveling by car. These figures highlight how important in-car listening has become and explain why the company is investing in a more integrated automotive experience.
With its new native app, Spotify aims to make listening on the road more convenient, with fewer connection steps and a dedicated interface built for the car.
