shotspotterEarlier this year we reported that a new security system was developed that could accurately pinpoint where a gun has been fired thanks to the sound of gunshots and muzzle flashes. Well it looks like over in California, a high school will be the first in the country to install a similar system within the school.

Dubbed ShotSpotter, the system which is similar to the previous one, will be able to pinpoint the location of gunfire. Granted it probably won’t help prevent any shootings, it will at least be able to tell students, teachers, and law enforcement officials where the shooter might be so that they can avoid that area and will allow for police to locate the suspect in a more efficient manner.

The system has been installed in various parts of the country but the Newark Memorial High School will be the first high school in the country to install the system on their grounds. Speaking to the Contra Costa Times, the school district’s superintendent Dave Marken expects that other schools will see the advantages of the system and will follow suit.

Marken was quoted as saying, “We look at this as the next wave of student and staff safety. Being right in the heart of Silicon Valley, we’re proud to be the first high school to implement this cutting-edge technology and we believe many others will follow.”
