Door locked!

Door locked!

The idea of being able to unlock your door lock via your smartphone isn’t new and they are available via a number of retailers. Now Apple used to carry such smart locks such as the smart locks by August and Kwikset’s Kevo, but according to a report by MacRumors it looks like both devices will no longer be available for purchase via Apple’s website.

They will still be available via other retailers but if you wanted to get your hands on it through Apple, you’d be out of luck. It is unclear as to why Apple has decided to stop offering both devices via its online store, but MacRumors has speculated that it might have something to do with HomeKit.

As it stands both August and Kevo are not HomeKit compatible. They still work with iPhones but given the emphasis Apple has placed on HomeKit, it is possible that the Cupertino company might be more interested in promoting devices that are HomeKit compatible and removing the ones that aren’t just to help prevent any confusion.

If you needed more proof of this being the case, Apple is still selling the Schlage Sense Smart Deadbolt which is probably the only smart lock around that has HomeKit integration. So if you wanted a smart lock with HomeKit integration that you could pick up from Apple, that would be it.
