Last month Opera announced a new feature that they were testing out in their browser. This was a battery saving feature that has been designed for laptops in which using Opera won’t consume as much battery compared to other browsers, such as Chrome who has in the past known to be a bit of a battery hog.

However the feature was in beta which meant that unless you took part in said beta, you wouldn’t be able to take advantage of the feature. The good news is that it looks like the battery saving feature is now out of beta and if you were to download and update your Opera browser to the latest version, you should be able to make use of it.

Opera even put together a video (see above) which shows a timelapse of their browser in action with battery saving mode enabled. According to Opera, the standard browser without battery saving mode will last as long as Chrome, which is around the 1:58 mark. However with battery saving mode enabled, it will let your laptop’s battery last for as long as 3 hours of non-stop surfing.

Of course your mileage will vary depending on what you do on your laptop, but if you are trying to squeeze out as much battery as possible, maybe taking the browser for a spin might not be a bad idea. You can download the latest version of Opera from its website.
