iphoneWhile other smartphone makers have embraced wireless charging technology, Apple has stuck to wired charging. Sure, there are third-party accessories that get the job done, but we suppose native support is always a much preferred option. The good news is that could be happening in the near future.

According to a report from DigiTimes, word has it that Apple and MediaTek are apparently working together to create wireless charging accessories. Note that wireless charging itself won’t actually be baked into the iPhone itself, but Apple and MediaTek are working on accessories like a case that would give the iPhone wireless charging.

Essentially you could think of this as an official iPhone case for wireless charging, kind of like how Apple already has official iPhone cases and official iPhone battery cases, so we guess this wouldn’t really be that much of a stretch. It is interesting that Apple would resort to this method of introducing wireless tech instead of baking it into the phone, but perhaps Apple is trying to gauge customer reaction to the idea.

It is unclear as to when these accessories will be announced, but with Apple’s iPhone event taking place tomorrow (the 7th of September), perhaps we will learn more then. Until then do take it with a grain of salt.
