moto-z-play-hands-on_08Ever since Lenovo acquired Motorola Mobility from Google back in 2014, many have wondered what Lenovo’s plans are for the company. After all Lenovo has their own smartphones, and Motorola has their own smartphones. In fact earlier this year there were rumors that Lenovo might phase out the Motorola branding.

However it turns out that is not the case. In fact it is actually the opposite because Lenovo has since announced that all future smartphones developed by the company will be branded as “Moto” smartphones. This also confirms an earlier rumor which suggests that Lenovo could drop their own branding for smartphones in favor of Motorola.

So what does this mean for customers? Basically it just means that as far as the Moto lineup is concerned, there will be more smartphones to choose from. Over the years Motorola has released Moto handsets in the X, G, and E family, but this year we saw the launch of the Z handsets and recently the Moto M was also announced in China.

Android Police has suggested that this will actually dilute the Motorola brand with phones made by Lenovo but are branded as “Moto” handsets. Whether or not this will prove detrimental remains to be seen, but in the meantime if you don’t see any Lenovo branded smartphones in the future, this is why.
