Viber is stepping up its game with the launch of a new feature today aimed at businesses and brands. This cross-platform messaging service is a competitor to the likes of Facebook Messenger and WhatsApp. It’s not one that can be ignored seeing as how Viber has more than 800 million users across the globe. It has launched Public Accounts today to make it easier for those users to connect with the businesses and brands they care about.

This new account format for businesses and brands will also enable those companies to reach out to Viber users with marketing and customer service. Public Accounts eliminate the need to add that account as a contact first, which is absolutely necessary when two individual users want to establish contact on Viber.

Viber has more than 1,000 Public Accounts at launch, ranging from news outlets like The Huffington Post to Yandex. These accounts will send updates and other information to users who subscribe to them.

Public Accounts will also enable businesses and brands to host bots but Viber won’t be building them itself. It will, however, provide tools for bot developers so that they can enhance this feature’s functionality.

The pricing model for this feature has not yet been revealed, but it’s likely that businesses and brands would be allowed to make the brands for free while they will be charged for other components.
