Google Assistant is Google’s new voice assistant platform that has found its way into the Pixel handsets as well as Google Home. However for some reason, Google Assistant was never able to control the Nest Thermostat via the Pixel phones, even though it worked just fine if you were do it via Google Home. At least that’s until now.

It has been noted by Android Police that users who own the Pixel and a Nest Thermostat will now be able to control the device using their phones. This means that you can now use your voice to adjust the thermostat’s various settings, like temperature and so on. However oddly enough they also point out that this seems to work despite Google Assistant’s settings remaining exactly the same as before.

They speculate that you might need to have the Nest integrated with Google Home first before using it on the Pixel, meaning that the Pixel acts like a medium between your commands and Google Home. We can’t say for sure if that is the case, but if you do own a Pixel or Pixel XL smartphone and a Nest thermostat, perhaps you might be interested in giving it a try and see if it works even without the Home integration.
