Samsung is investing heavily to further extend its position in the semiconductor market. According to a new report out of South Korea, the company is now aiming to start manufacturing 7nm class chipsets by early next year. The company’s contract semiconductor manufacturing business has grown steadily over the past few years and it now contributes a major chunk to its revenues.
7nm class chipsets can reasonably be expected to deliver improvements in performance and power consumption. It’s believed that Samsung has introduced Extreme Ultraviolet Exposure Equipment into the logic process to ensure that the 7nm chip remains competitive in power efficiency and performance.
“We expect 7nm technology to be challenging for all of the patterning scaling,” adding that the company will “lead the most advanced technology with the same competitiveness as 14nm and 10nm,” said Dr. Heo Kuk, Managing Director of Samsung Electronics’ System LSI Division.
He also said that with the stabilization of Samsung’s 14nm process, the company is now diversifying its automotive, mobile, network, and graphics business to achieve small-scale results. It expects 14nm process demand to remain robust.
These steps will certainly go a long way in ensuring that Samsung’s position in the semiconductor market isn’t challenged by its rivals.
