One of the rumored features of this year’s iPhone is that it will see Apple finally switch to an OLED display. However one of the recent reports have suggested that due to shortages, the OLED iPhone will be limited to a particular model of the iPhone 8 Plus variety, meaning that Apple’s other iPhones will continue to use LCD.

However a new report out of Korea from The Investor (via Cult of Mac) is painting a very different picture. If the reports are true, it seems that Apple has ordered an additional 60 million OLEDs from Samsung. This is on top of a previously rumored agreement in which Samsung would supply Apple with 100 million OLED panels for the iPhone 8.

Now 160 million is obviously not a small figure to scoff at, and like we said it seems to contradict the earlier claims that the OLED screen would be exclusive to the iPhone 8 Plus. Given that Apple typically sells about 200 million iPhones a year, 160 million means that it accounts for 80% of iPhone sales, meaning that it seems unlikely that all 160 million orders are just for one particular model.

In any case take it with a grain of salt for now, but this could possibly be good news for would-be customers who do not plan to purchase the larger Plus model, but would still like an OLED screen anyway.
