Facebook’s interest in video has been pretty well-established. In fact just recently the company released a dedicated video app designed for devices like smart TVs and media players such as the Apple TV, and it seems that the company could be looking to expand beyond hosting videos created by others.

In a report from The Wall Street Journal (paywall; via Gadgets 360), it has been reported that Facebook is looking into broadcasting original shows as well. This is actually not the first time we have heard that Facebook is looking to do original videos, and just last month it was reported that the social network had hired a former MTV executive to help with their efforts.

Facebook’s decision isn’t that surprising, especially when you consider how successful companies such as Netflix has been with its original shows which has had a huge cultural impact with shows such as House of Cards, Orange is the New Black, Stranger Things, and also creating several TV series based on Marvel characters.

The report claims that Facebook is looking into a variety of genres such as sports to science, lifestyle, gaming, and even possibly weekly series that could run for around 30 minutes. No word on if or when these original shows will air, so take it with a grain of salt for now.
