Google has made some interesting announcements today at the I/O 2017 developers conference. The company has confirmed that Google Assistant for Android TV is going to be released later this year. It’s no surprise that Google is expanding its AI-powered assistant to more platforms, it was only a matter of time before it did that.

The company shared some information about Android TV’s progress at I/O 2017 today. It revealed that the Play Store now hosts more than 3,000 Android TV apps.

Google’s vice president of engineering for Android Dave Burke confirmed on stage at I/O 2017 today that Google Assistant is going to be released for Android TV later this year. He also mentioned that Assistant will be accompanied by a brand new launcher for Android TV.

Another interesting figure that the company revealed during the event today was that it’s seeing more than one million Android TVs coming online every two months. That’s significant in its own right and goes to show that Google has hit the ground running with Android TV.

Google is yet to confirm precisely when this update is going to be released for Android TV so it’s unclear right now how long users will have to wait before they get Assistant and a brand new launcher on their smart TV.
