At the end of the year, Star Wars Episode VIII, also known as The Last Jedi, will be released. This means that as far as the latest trilogy is concerned, there will be only one Star Wars movie left, which is Episode XI that will be released in 2019. If you’re a bit sad that this trilogy is ending, worry not.

In an announcement posted onto the Star Wars website, Disney has announced and confirmed that a new Star Wars trilogy is being planned, and that it will be created by Rian Johnson, who for those unfamiliar is the director behind The Last Jedi. Unfortunately it is unclear when the new trilogy will be released, but given that we still have Episode IX to look forward to, we reckon it could be a while before we see or hear anything more about it.

According to Kathleen Kennedy, president of Lucasfilm, “We all loved working with Rian on The Last Jedi. He’s a creative force, and watching him craft The Last Jedi from start to finish was one of the great joys of my career. Rian will do amazing things with the blank canvas of this new trilogy.”

Presumably the trilogy would pick off from where Episode IX ends, kind of like how the current trilogy is more or less a sequel to the original trilogy that was released back in 1977. However it is possible that in between we can expect other standalone Star Wars movies, like we did with Rogue One and the upcoming Han Solo movie. So, who else is excited about this new trilogy?
