Recently there was a report that suggested that Samsung’s number one position in India had been stolen by Xiaomi. This was based on shipping figures from research firms Counterpoint and Canalys, where it showed that Xiaomi had outshipped Samsung in Q4 2017, finally overtaking the Korean tech giant.

However it seems that Samsung is taking issue with that and has recently come forward and insisted that they are still at the top. According to a statement by a Samsung India spokesperson that was made to IANS, “As per the German research firm GfK, which tracks sales to end consumers, in the last (November) quarter, Samsung had a 45 percent value market share and 40 percent volume market share.”

It should be pointed out that Samsung is making the distinction between smartphones shipped versus smartphones sold. There is a clear difference because phones shipped does not represent phones sold, although sometimes it can be pretty close as companies tend to ship as much as is demanded as having too big of a surplus is not good.

The Samsung spokesperson adds, “Samsung is a full-range player and leads the smartphone business across every segment of the India market in 2017. More importantly, Samsung is India’s ‘Most Trusted’ brand. We owe our undisputed leadership to the love and trust of millions of our consumers in the country.”
