The Apple TV for the most part is great if you want to watch videos, and less so when it comes to gaming, or at least that was the case until Apple made some changes in recent years where they are trying to encourage gaming on the device. This is thanks to the introduction of a new remote for the Apple TV that helps bring about a better gaming experience.

However it seems that Apple has bigger gaming ambitions for the Apple TV, at least according to a report from Patently Apple in which they noticed an update to Apple’s “Apple TV” trademark filing. The update to the trademark seems to suggest that Apple might have bigger gaming plans for the Apple TV that they have yet to announce.

The updated trademark now includes, “video game consoles; controllers for game consoles; video output games, namely, video output game machines for use with televisions; apparatus for electronic games adapted for use with an external display screen or monitor.” Of course this is by no means a guarantee of what will come.

Intellectual property filings are done to ensure that they are protected from being stolen or used by someone else without the proper licensing or credit, so it is possible that Apple could simply be trying to cover their bases. In any case with an iPad event rumored for March and WWDC in the middle of the year, perhaps Apple could share more Apple TV details then.
