There were no rumors about this which is why Ubisoft’s announcement today came as a surprise. It announced a surprise sequel to 2016’s The Division. Ubisoft has revealed that The Divison 2 is going to be developed by Massive Entertainment, the Swedish studio that was the main developer behind the original online shooter as well.

Ubisoft says that The Division team has evolved a lot ever since the first title was launched in 2016. The team is nimbler and better prepared to take action based on feedback, it says. “And now, more than ever before, we have a clear vision of what’s important and what continues to make The Division a special experience for so many people,” Ubisoft adds.

It says that the story in the original title was always meant to be the beginning chapter in a larger saga so it’s not going to end with the first game. It has thus announced Tom Clancy’s The Division 2 today with Massive Entertainment leading the development in collaboration with Ubisoft Reflections, Red Storm Entertainment, Ubisoft Annecy, Shanghai, and Bucharest. The Division 2 will run on an updated version of Ubisoft’s Snowdrop engine.

No further information has been revealed about the title as yet so it’s not clear when it’s going to be released. However, Ubisoft is going to provide more details about The Division 2 at E3 2018 in June.
