A report from a couple of years ago suggested that Apple could be looking to discontinue its AirPort series of routers. It was unclear why, but perhaps Apple could simply be looking to redirect its resources to bigger projects. Unfortunately for those who do love the AirPorts, it has since been discontinued.

In an official statement issued by Apple, the company says, “We’re discontinuing the Apple AirPort base station products. They will be available through Apple.com, Apple’s retail stores and Apple Authorized Resellers while supplies last.” It is was not mentioned if Apple plans on continuing support in terms of security updates and what not, but we wouldn’t be surprised if they didn’t.

It is an interesting move by Apple because a customer survey taken a couple of years ago found that the AirPorts ranked highly in terms of customer satisfaction. However like we said, perhaps Apple simply would rather take those resources to put to another bigger and possibly more lucrative project.

Previously Apple had also discontinued their Thunderbolt displays, instead choosing to outsource that work to LG who made Apple-specific UltraFine displays. That being said these AirPort routers will still be available while stocks last, so if you would like to pick up a couple for future use now might be a good time to do so.
