The latest Sonos speakers are receiving a new software update today which adds AirPlay 2 support. The speakers that are receiving this update today will be able to let iOS users select the speakers that they want music to be played through, taking advantage of the new multi-room audio support.

The company’s decision to release AirPlay 2 support for only select devices won’t surprise anyone as the company recently suggested that it may soon become the norm for its older devices to not get feature updates as frequently as they did in the past.

Sonos is rolling out this update today for its Sonos Beam, Playbase, Sonos One, and second-generation Play:5 speakers. Once the updated is downloaded, they will all get support for AirPlay 2.

There’s a way that users with older speakers can get AirPlay 2 as well. They will have to group the older speakers with one of the compatible speakers in order to get AirPlay 2 working on them. So they’ll have to purchase one of the latest speakers anyway.

AirPlay 2 also brings enhanced Siri integration so users will be able to command the virtual assistant to play music on specific speakers. Alexa support is also present on modern Sonos speakers so it can be used to control playback of musing playing via AirPlay 2 as well.
