It is more or less a given that the 2018 iPhones will support wireless charging. Now according to a new report from China Times (via 9to5Mac), it is now said that 2018 iPhones will not only feature wireless charging, but it could even support faster wireless charging which is one of the drawbacks of using the technology.

Wireless charging has been known to be slower compared to regular charging. Apple tried to address that last year by supporting up to 7.5W of power, but the report is now claiming that this year’s iPhones could support up to 15W, effectively doubling the current wireless charging speeds.

To achieve that, apparently Apple is said to use copper wire coils in the iPhones, versus the use of flexible printed circuits which were used for last year’s iPhones. This allows for greater efficiency and power capabilities, but the downside is that they are thicker. Exactly how Apple is getting around that is unclear, but the report claims that this feature might not make it onto all 2018 models, and that it might only arrive for one.

If we had to venture a guess, we would say the larger 6.5-inch iPhone X, which due to its larger size could allow Apple to shift some components around to support the thicker copper coil. Take it with a grain of salt for now, but it is clear that Apple is trying to differentiate itself from the rest of the competition who already offer wireless charging in their phones. Apple’s AirPower is rumored to finally launch in September alongside the new iPhones, where last we heard could cost $150.
