At one point in time a very popular tablet category was the “mini” category where manufacturers would churn out tablets with 7-inch or so displays, which were admittedly popularized by Apple’s iPad mini. The mini trend seems to have died out with Apple more or less being the only company still putting out such devices.

For those who love the iPad mini, there might be bad news because it seems that the iPad mini might not be refreshed this year. According to a report from DigiTimes, apparently Apple has no plans to refresh the iPad mini this year, which means that if you wanted a new model, you’d be out of luck. Instead you’d have to opt for the fourth generation iPad mini which was originally launched back in 2015.

This means that the tablet would be a tablet with three years old worth of hardware in it, and while we suppose it is still largely functional, we’re sure that there are some who would love to see it updated with more modern hardware. There have been rumors in the past that have suggested that Apple could be planning on phasing out the iPad mini.

Some of the appeals of the iPad mini is its smaller screen and lower price tag compared to the regular iPad, but earlier this year Apple did launch a more affordable 9.7-inch model, so if price is a bigger factor compared to portability, that could be worth checking out as an alternative.
