Serial, the popular true crime podcast, is returning for its third season. It has been confirmed this morning that the much-awaited third season is going to be aired on September 20th. A trailer for the season has been released today as well. It’s going to be taking listeners through a year in the Cleveland court system as it explores the cases that go in and out of the system.

The first season of Serial came out in 2014. It followed the story of Adnan Syed who was tried and convicted of the murder of Mae Min Lee in Baltimore back in 1999.

The second season came out in 2015 and it followed the story of U.S. Army Sergeant Bowe Bergdahl. There were no releases over the past couple of years as the team kept working on the upcoming season which was first expected to be launched in 2016.

It has been officially announced this morning that Serial’s third season will be launched on September 20th. A 7-minute preview has been released as well to provide fans with a glimpse of what to expect from the new season. The podcast won’t focus on one major case in this season as the focus is on the entire court system of Cleveland instead.

The team chose Cleveland because “they were given extraordinary access to record inside courtrooms, judges’ chambers, back hallways, and attorneys’ offices.” They used that access to look at cases ranging from drug possession to serious felonies.
