These days there seems to be a trend these days amongst teens where they create dancing and singing videos using the TikTok app. For those unfamiliar, TikTok is an app that lets users create fun and funny videos with effects while they sing and dance along to songs in the background.

If this sounds familiar, it is because Music.ly was the western counterpart to TikTok in which the former has since been acquired by the latter. However it seems that TikTok might have some competition soon because in a report from TechCrunch, it looks like Facebook is interested in creating its own version of TikTok known as “Lasso”.

According to one of TechCrunch’s sources, “It’s basically TikTok/Musically . It’s full-screen, built for teens, fun and funny and focused on creation. A lot of what they’re doing is just trying to be cool.” No word on when the app will be launched or if it will be launched at all. It is possible that Facebook might simply be testing the idea and may or may not go through with it, but we’ll have to wait and see.

In the meantime it’s not hard to see why Facebook might want to launch a similar app. Data from App Annie has revealed that TikTok managed to rise from no. 32 on the over iPhone app charts to no. 5 in just three months, so perhaps Facebook wants to try and capitalize on that. Facebook is also not new to borrowing ideas from competitors. Instagram’s Stories is a prime example in which it was reported that Instagram’s Stories ended up being more popular.
