OnePlus is one of the many companies that will be releasing a 5G smartphone in 2019. The company has ben talking up its 5G phone plans over the past few months. A new report today says that while the first OnePlus 5G phone is going to be out in the second quarter of this year, it won’t be available in the United States initially.

OnePlus is going to show a prototype of its first 5G phone at the Mobile World Congress 2019 which kicks off tomorrow in Barcelona. The report from USA Today mentions that the device is going to be released on UK’s EE first before arriving on Finish carrier Elisa. Both carriers will offer the device in the second quarter of this year.

The company did share an image of the prototype device that it’s going to unveil tomorrow with the scribe. However, not much can be made of the design as it is wrapped in a protective casing. It remains to be seen if the company is planning to show off the design as well tomorrow or if it will keep that obscured even at MWC. What we do know so far about this device is that it’s going to run on Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 855 mobile platform in addition to the company’s X50 5G modem.

“It’s still very early days for 5G, and we want to take the opportunity to raise more awareness particularly within the OnePlus community, but not just limited to the OnePlus community, in what we can look forward to with 5G,” said OnePlus founder and CEO Pete Lau.

Lau does mention that OnePlus has plans for other 5G devices that will work in the United States. For now, the company is going to make a 4G LTE variant of this device which work with U.S. carriers. It remains to be seen when OnePlus finally brings a 5G phone to the United States.
