Product placement in movies is pretty common. We see it all the time, where sometimes we see characters in movies use computers and phones and cars from a variety of companies, so it shouldn’t really be a surprise if every now and then, you come across a movie where a character is using an iPhone.

All of this sounds pretty normal and standard, and while Apple does not have a problem with product placement, it seems that the company does have certain rules on how its products can be used or portrayed. In a video with Vanity Fair, director Rian Johnson revealed a piece of little-known trivia.

According to Johnson, who was breaking down the scenes in his Knives Out movie, he revealed that Apple does not allow bad guys in movies to use an iPhone. “Another funny thing … I don’t know if I should say this or not, haha! … It’s very interesting. Apple, they let you use iPhones in movies, but — and this is very pivotal, if you’re ever watching a mystery movie — bad guys cannot have iPhones on camera.”

Presumably this is due to Apple’s concern about their image, where they don’t want the iPhone to be associated with villany of any kind. We’re not sure how true this is, but we wouldn’t be surprised as companies probably have different rules when it comes to featuring the use of their products, especially in the mainstream media.
