Are foldable phones the next big thing? We’ve seen several of them launch already, but they haven’t quite taken over like we would have expected. Presumably price is one of the reasons why many have yet to adopt the technology, so maybe if it was a bit more affordable, things could change.

That being said, Apple has been rumored to be exploring the idea themselves and now according to a post on Weibo by leakster Ice Universe, Apple seems to be furthering their interest. According to the post, the leakster claims that Apple has apparently ordered a “large number” of foldable display samples from Samsung.

The post claims that these foldable displays will be used on mobile devices, and that Samsung is expected to supply Apple with these display samples over the period of a year, meaning that Apple is actually rather actively looking into creating such a device. It is unclear what Apple’s plans are at the moment, so it remains to be seen what kind of product Apple could use this for.

Presumably it would be used for the iPhone, but at the same time, it could also be used for the iPad where Apple could try to create larger iPads with a foldable display that would make them more portable. Take it with a grain of salt, especially since companies experiment and prototype new devices all the time without necessarily taking them to the market.
