Just yesterday, Apple officially took the wraps off its own-branded AirPods Max over-ear headphones. Now the headphones have been a long time coming, or at least that’s what the rumors have been telling us. We’ve actually heard that Apple was working on a pair of over-ear headphones in the past, so the launch did not come as a surprise.

However, it seems that the earlier rumors could have been right all along because turns out that this might have been a device that has been four years in the making. This is according to a tweet by Dinesh Dave, who is currently a product designer over at Facebook, but prior to that, he was actually a Senior Interactive Designer at Apple.

Dave’s tweet, which has since been deleted, claims that the “last product NDA I signed is finally out” accompanied by an image of the AirPods Max. While the tweet was still active, one user asked Dave how long ago did he sign the NDA, in which he said it was four years ago. This is about the same time that the original AirPods made their debut, suggesting that Apple was working on the AirPods Max roughly around the same time.

We’re not sure why it took Apple four years to bring the AirPods Max to the market, but we suppose better late than never. The AirPods Max is currently available for purchase where it is priced at $550, making it one of the more expensive headphones we’ve seen in recent times. It remains to be seen whether or not its features can justify its price tag.
