PUBG: Battlegrounds is one several extremely popular battle royale style games available at the moment. Not to be confused with the mobile version of the game, PUBG: Battlegrounds is a title available on the PC, PlayStation, and Xbox consoles where it is priced at $30.

However, in an announcement by the developer, it seems that come 2022, PUBG: Battlegrounds will be going free to play. If you’ve been meaning to get into the game but haven’t, come 2022 it might be a good time to do so. Players who are new to the game will also have an optional one-time fee of $12.99 to upgrade your account to Battlegrounds Plus. This will also give players extra currency, a Ranked Mode, and Custom Match functionality, a bunch of in-game items, and other bonuses.

This is completely optional but if you want the extra features and bonuses, you’ll have to pay for it. As for players who had previously purchased the game, they’ll be getting a special  PUBG Special Commemorative Pack that includes a free upgrade to Battlegrounds Plus and additional in-game items.

This change is expected to take place on the 12th of January, 2022, so if you have been meaning to get the game, it might be a better idea to wait until 2022 to do so. Even if you do decide to upgrade to Battlegrounds Plus, it will still be cheaper than buying the game outright right now.
