SpaceX appears to be preparing the launch of its next-generation compact satellite terminal, provisionally named the Starlink Mini 2. Information leaked on social media by hardware engineer Oleg Kutkov suggests that the upcoming device will introduce several notable design enhancements alongside a few technical trade-offs aimed at improving mobility and power management.

The most significant upgrade in the Starlink Mini 2 is the inclusion of an integrated lithium battery directly within the terminal chassis. This built-in power supply frees users from constant reliance on external power outlets or dedicated wiring setups.
To complement this portable architecture, the device will support USB-C charging with an operating voltage range between 11V and 24V. This flexible power configuration is particularly advantageous for off-grid users, campers, and operators of recreational vehicles or maritime vessels who frequently rely on portable power banks or auxiliary electrical systems.

However, incorporating an internal battery necessitates tighter power constraints. According to the leak, the terminal’s transmit duty cycle—the fraction of time the hardware actively transmits data to the satellite network—will be reduced from 75% to 11%. This restriction is expected to lower maximum upload speeds, with the most noticeable impact occurring during prolonged or large-scale data transfers.
Despite the reduced duty cycle, the Starlink Mini 2 features several structural and hardware optimizations. The physical footprint of the terminal is smaller overall, and the integrated receiver array contains 549 radiant elements, reflecting a minor reduction from the 571 elements used in the first-generation Mini.
Additionally, the device retains the proprietary “Catapult” processor found in its predecessor, along with embedded GPS hardware that allows continuous satellite tracking and in-motion functionality. To ensure reliable operation in demanding environments, the unit has also been re-engineered with higher thermal thresholds, helping maintain performance stability during extreme weather conditions.
Although SpaceX has not officially announced an availability date or pricing details, reports indicate that production is already under way. Consequently, an official product unveiling and full commercial release are widely anticipated to occur in the near future.
