A new leak suggests that SpaceX may soon introduce an updated version of its Starlink Mini antenna featuring a major upgrade for portable connectivity: a built-in battery. The discovery was shared by researcher Jinwei Zhao, who uncovered new strings of data within the SpaceX database.

The code contains specific parameters, such as “DishBatteryStats,” indicating that the system will possess the technical capability to monitor internal battery performance and track exact charge percentages. Currently, the standard Starlink Mini lacks this ability; even when connected to a user’s third-party external power bank, the device cannot display or communicate remaining battery life.

Power Architecture and States

According to the leaked documentation, the upcoming hardware variant will operate across three distinct power states. This architectural change allows the portable antenna to draw power directly through a standard USB-C connection, rely solely on the integrated internal battery, or utilize both power sources simultaneously.

Solving Portability Bottlenecks

An integrated power source addresses a long-standing demand from outdoor enthusiasts, campers, and professionals operating in remote locations devoid of electrical grids. At present, users of the compact Starlink Mini must rely on standard AC wall outlets or heavy external portable power stations to maintain a satellite connection.

Market Impact and Technical Expectations

While third-party modifications exist to make the dish more mobile, these aftermarket solutions often suffer from unstable software integration and high retail costs. A proprietary hardware solution would resolve these performance and compatibility bottlenecks.

While SpaceX has not issued an official statement regarding the leak, industry expectations point toward an internal battery capacity capped at 99 watt-hours (Wh). This specific threshold complies with standard airline regulations for carry-on luggage while offering users up to five hours of continuous autonomous operation. This development follows a period of consumer scrutiny regarding recent subscription price increases across Starlink’s satellite internet tiers, positioning the upcoming hardware revision as a highly practical alternative for mobile connectivity.
