Motorola Files Complaint Against RIM

Patent wars seem to be the theme of 2010, and now it seems that Motorola and RIM will be starting one of their own. According to a press release issued by Motorola, the company has filed a complaint with the US International Trade Commission (ITC), alleging that RIM has engaged in unfair trade practices by selling products that infringe on five of Motorola’s parents. The patents apparently cover key technology areas such as Wi-Fi access, user interface, application management and power management. In light of this, Motorola has asked the ITC to bar RIM’s importation of infringing products, basically asking them to halt the marketing, advertising, demonstration and warehousing of inventory for distribution and use of said products in the US. Will this turn into another bitter fight, such as the one between Apple and Nokia? Press release.
