The next time you hear a composition that soothes your ears and soul, it might not be a human who fully composed it, as robots have now managed to reach a level where they can collaborate with their creators to make beautiful music – at least at the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts). Musical director Dr. Ajay Kapur and technical director Michael Darling have a dream of advancing the possibilities of human computer interactivity, and they have done so with the launch of the KarmetiK Machine Orchestra. These two CalArts faculty members are currently collaborating with students and prestigious guest artists in order to develop one-of-a-kind robotic instruments that are meant for multimedia performances. Check out a video of such a virtuoso performance in the extended post.
