oculus riftThe Oculus Rift virtual reality headset was originally pegged for a release this year, or at least that was the intention of the developers. However a report from last month suggested that the device had been delayed and might not be launched in 2015 after all and would most likely see a release in 2016.

Turns out the report was right as the folks at Oculus have officially announced that the virtual reality headset would only begin shipping to customers in Q1 2016. We suppose this is actually rather good news as prior to this, we did not have an official release date, only speculation and rough estimates as to when the consumer version might be released.

According to the team, “Since the earliest days of the Oculus Kickstarter, the Rift has been shaped by gamers, backers, developers, and enthusiasts around the world. Today, we’re incredibly excited to announce that the Oculus Rift will be shipping to consumers in Q1 2016, with pre-orders later this year.”

Unfortunately apart from giving us a timeline next year as to when the device might be shipped, additional information such as the final hardware specifications and pricing remain unknown. However while pricing might still be up in the air, the folks at Oculus have promised that in terms of hardware and tech specs, more details will be revealed next week.
