AndroidWatch_02A smartwatch app that can control your car; where have we heard that before? If this sounds familiar, it is because in the past, carmakers such as Volvo and Hyundai have released apps that allows car owners to control their vehicles via their wrists. Of course the control is less about driving the car, but more about unlocking it, checking its status, and so on.

If you’re a Ford owner who is feeling a bit left out, fret not because Ford has announced that they have recently updated their MyFord Mobile app which will now include versions for the Apple Watch and Android Wear platform. This means you will now be able to enjoy controlling your vehicle via your wrist.

However there is a catch and that is the app will only play nicely with Ford’s battery electric or plug-in hybrid models. The app will allow owners of these vehicles to check on their car’s battery status, unlock their doors, get a driving score, and even find out where their vehicle is parked in the event you forgot.

According to David Hatton, Ford manager, Connected Vehicles and Services, “The app gives drivers the ability to quickly check important data like available range before leaving on a journey – without having to access the mobile application on their smartphone. The app can also notify users when their car is fully charged, helping a driver be courteous to other electric vehicle owners so they can free up the charging spot or avoid fees applied at some charging stations when you overrun your time after the charge is complete.”

The update should be live so head on over to your respective app stores for the download.
