It’s quite usual for the United States Postal Service to issue special stamps from time to time that celebrate a particular event in history or a distinguished personality. The service has provided a preview of its 2016 stamp program in which special stamps will be issued to honor the likes of Star Trek, NASA’s New Horizons mission, Shirley Temple aside from the holidays, soda fountain fans and much more.

Trekkies will be well aware that the hit series premiered on television back in 1966 and it is to commemorate the 50th anniversary that the Postal Service has announced its plan to issue four new Forever stamps that will cost about 0.49 cents in the United States.

The stamps feature retro illustrations of Star Trek iconography, including but not limited to Spock’s infamous Vulcan salute, the Starship Enterprise and the insignia of Starfleet. They feature colors of Starfleet uniforms which include blue, red, green and yellow.

The service has also announced Views of Our Planets stamps with eight new Forever stamps that feature Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune. Since NASA’s New Horizons mission has been successful, it brought us some wonderful images of Pluto, two new stamps will be issued that will contain an artists’ rendering of the New Horizons spacecraft and an image of Pluto taken near its closest approach.

Special stamps are great additions if you collect stamps, they are also real stamps, which means the Global Forever stamps can be used to mail a one ounce letter to any international country where first-class mail service is provided.
