This is something that will excite Star Trek fans. Some have long held on to the wish that Patrick Stewart would return to the series and reprise his role as Jean-Luc Picard. Other, including Stewart it seems, believed that it may never happen. They have all been proven wrong as Stewart is indeed returning to the Star Trek universe to play the role of Picard once again.

Patrick Stewart himself made the announcement on Instagram which was timed with the on-stage announcement at the Star Trek Las Vegas 2018 convention.

“I will always be very proud to have been a part of Star Trek: The Next Generation, but when we wrapped that final movie in the spring of 2002, I truly felt my time with Star Trek had run its natural course,” Stewart said.

He mentioned that it’s an unexpected but delightful surprise that he’s going to be returning as Jean-Luc Picard, adding that the creative team will work hard to bring a “fresh, unexpected and pertinent story” to life.

The new Star Trek Discovery series will focus on the next chapter of Picard’s life which probably takes place after the events of Star Trek: The Next Generation. It will be available through CBS All Access, the network’s online streaming service.
