Selfies are a global phenomenon, a craze that doesn’t appear to be in the mood to die down anytime soon, it leads people to do some crazy things to get the perfect selfie. These crazy things can often get them injured or killed but to some people that possibility doesn’t factor in the quest for the perfect selfie. New data released by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons reveals that the quest for the perfect selfie has even contributed to a surge in lip surgeries.

The data shows that 2015 was a “record” year for lip augmentation surgeries, this made it the second-fastest-growing facial procedure for patients in the United States since the year 2000. Men and women are both taking part in this as more than 27,449 procedures were done on both genders combined last year.

“We live in the age of the selfie, and because we see images of ourselves almost constantly on social media, we’re much more aware of how our lips look,” says David Song, the MD and president of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

The data also reveals that cosmetic procedures have seen an overall drop of 10 percent since the year 2000 while during the same time “upper arm lift” procedures have seen a quadruple-digit growth.

Breast augmentation remains the top cosmetic surgery procedure with more than 279,143 women going under the knife for it in just 2015 alone.
