Apple is expected to launch its second-generation smartwatch later this year. There have been a lot of rumors about what we can expect from the Apple Watch 2. One of the features expected in the upcoming wearable device is a built-in GPS. Now that’s going to require quite a bit of power which is why a new rumor suggests that the Apple Watch 2 battery is going to get a 35 percent increase when compared to its predecessor.
A leak on Chinese social media site Weibo suggests that the battery on the Apple Watch is being bumped up from the 0.94 Wh-246mAh unit in the original Apple Watch to a 1.28 Wh-334mAh in the successor.
However, since the Apple Watch 2 is expected to retain the design of its predecessor, it’s likely that some internal components will need to be changed in order to fit the slightly larger battery inside the same case.
Built-in GPS is likely going to be one of the biggest features of the Apple Watch 2 and that’s a component which warrants the need for a bigger battery. A report published recently suggested that Apple was aiming for cellular support in the Apple Watch 2 but decided against it due to battery woes.
The Apple Watch 2 is currently expected to be unveiled at the company’s event for new iPhones next month. Apple has obviously said nothing about a new smartwatch at this point in time.
